The Associated Students of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC) hosted a table with activities and goodies in honor of Constitution Day, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., in front of the Student Union. The table aimed to inform students on campus about the Constitution and its 27 Amendments in an interactive way.
July of next year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Independence. The U.S. is a relatively young nation, but the Constitution has served as the foundation to protect and preserve American freedom and rights. Thus, every year, colleges across the U.S. celebrate Constitution Day on Sept. 17. The ASRHC is usually in charge of planning an event for Constitution Day.
ASRHC Senator of Legislative Affairs, Joey Gonzales, planned and coordinated the event. His role “consists of promoting political education and awareness among RHC community through implementation of legislative events and government relations events.” Gonzales said. Constitution Day is one significant example of that. Gonzales wanted students to learn to engage with material to create a fun learning experience.
Gonzales had a team to support him in creating the event. His team members included Student Life and Leadership Administrative Assistant, Aracely Cruz, Student Activities Assistant, Cynthia Morales, Director of Student Life and Leadership, Rosa Moncada, and other ASRHC members. Gonzales explained that his team supported him throughout the creating the activities for the Constitution Day table by giving him “input on what they think and what other factors can be implemented.” The team also helped with setting up the table and tabled with him during the event.
There were 3 activities set up: Create your own Amendment, Constitution Knowledge Test, and Match the Amendment. For Create your own Amendment, students were able to use notecards to write their own amendments and drop them into the “Create an Amendment” suggestion box. For the Constitution Knowledge Test, there was a nickel used to drop into a grid to randomly choose one of the four questions that were written at the bottom of the grid. For Match the Amendment, students had the opportunity to test their knowledge of the 27 Amendments of the Constitution by attempting to correctly match all of the amendments with their corresponding description. For any of the 3 activities, students were able to receive a snack. In addition to participating in the activities at the table, students had the opportunity to pick up goodies including pens, highlighters, notepads, ASRHC lanyards, and a Constitution cheatsheet.
The outcome of the team’s goal is what they were aiming for. “The outcome went great, we were able to get a good amount of students to interact and be able to conversate amongst each other.” The ASRHC and the students were able to engage with the students visiting the table and have a stress free outcome. The Constitution Day table was a space that was able to impact the students to have fun while learning. A final word from Gonzales is that “We as AS, we are here to advocate and have the opportunity to create spaces for students to feel welcomed and heard.”
