Rio Hondo’s Softball team took the field on Thursday to face the ELAC Huskies in what was a one sided game from start to finish.
Starting pitcher for the Roadrunners Alexia Mayorga took the mound to start the game and quickly faced trouble as the Huskies threatened with runners on second and first base, though Mayorga retired the next three batters to end the top of the first inning. For the Roadrunners they were retired quickly by Huskies pitcher Alexis Arguellas to end the bottom of the inning.
To start the top of the second, the Huskies came out swinging as they hit 2 singles to have runners on second and third before Nayeli Priest hit another to open the scoring for the Huskies making it a 1-0 game. It did not stop there as Nathaly Ochoa tripled to left center field scoring two more runs to make it a 3-0 score before the Roadrunners got the third out to end the inning.
Until the fourth inning the Huskies struck again with a sacrifice fly from Zyanne Diaz to score another run to make it 4-0.
Mayorga kept the opposing team quiet for the entire 5th inning until the 6th when the Huskies scored another 3 runs by a single from Ochoa scoring one and a double from Bella Garcia bringing in 2 more to make it a 7-0 game.
For the Roadrunners they were left scoreless throughout the game until the 7th inning where they had bases loaded with 2 gone when Alona Sanchez walked to score the first run for the team. The RHC team had momentum right after scoring the run but it ended quickly when Brooklyn Romero hit a fly ball to the gap in left center when Zyanne Diaz the center fielder for the Huskies made a spectacular diving catch to rob a hit for the Roadrunners and end the game.
After the game, the Head Coach for the Roadrunners Bianca Urquidi talked about the team performance from the game.
“We need to figure out how to execute the small things so that the big things take care of themselves and also make sure to take care of all of the fundamentals”, Urquidi said.
For the starting pitcher, Mayorga would have wanted to approach the game differently from how it went.
“I think we should have our heads up and cheer each other on and just be more productive on the at bats and for me personally be more confident in the circle and as a team as well be more confident but we got it”, Mayorga said.
Second baseman Alona Sanchez talked about how she wants to improve her game.
“Something I think I can improve on would be my hitting at the plate, going up there with a plan that’s more self solidified and just pushing through with my mental”, Sanchez said.
For shortstop Gisselle Ramirez-Huerta, the performance she showed was not her full potential.
“I would say it was fifty percent not my full…but next game I got it by being more confident on the plate and in my fielding as well I think that could have been totally different”, Ramirez-Huerta said.
For the RHC Roadrunners, they must commit to what they want to execute in order to win games as their season will continue as they go up against the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks on Friday, Feb 28.
