Between keeping up with their classes, jobs, and other important things, students spend most of their time and day indoors where there is much more outside waiting for them.
At Rio Hondo College, students are finding out that connecting with nature can be a great way to de-stress, focus, and build a sense of awareness.
For Rio Hondo students, it is all around them.
The scenery of the school includes plenty of green spaces for students to enjoy.
Around the campus, students are able to sit down on benches that include being next to plants and trees.
Those seating areas give students an opportunity to study.
For some students, having those areas on campus gives them the chance to clear their minds about anything they feel is blocking them.
Second year student, David Lopez, gave some insight on how nature has helped him become better focused in school.
“Being outside with nature has helped me in many ways. It’s been easier for me to study because I feel my mind is more open than before and can focus clearly afterwards,” Lopez said.
A huge plus at the school is that many of the events are held outside in the quad where nature is involved.
This gives students a sense of belonging to nature as they are learning about the environment that surrounds them on campus.
Having trails near the school is another important part to students clearing their minds.
It’s an easy way for them to see nature and connect with it while also giving them easy access to the natural environment.
One of the most common distractions for students has been on their phones all the time.
Being able to let go of their device and connect with what surrounds them while studying or relaxing is a huge plus.
It might not be a lot of what nature has for students, but the feeling of having it around you and being consistent with small actions like standing or sitting for a few minutes can help students relax.
Having the simplicity of nature around students who are dealing with stress and keeping up with their daily routine can ensure that they are able to become better in their own way even if it takes time to realize the payoff it takes to become better.
As the school year continues, students will realize that nature can help with their education and is a resource for them where they can recharge, refocus, and reconnect with themselves.
