This upcoming Sunday, May 24th, The 2026 Indianapolis 500 will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. The event takes place around the historic four-turn 2.5 mile speedway with pre-race ceremonies beginning at 10:00am EST and the Green Flag dropping at 12:45pm EST. Drivers will exceed speeds of 200mph for almost the entirety of the event, making the race a must watch.
A race steeped in tradition and prestige, the event holds serious weight among the international motorsports community. It is perhaps the most sought-after win in all of racing.
Defending 500 winner Alex Palou, a driver currently eviscerating the Indycar Garage, will lead the 33-car field to green in the #10 Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing after qualifying on pole with a four-lap average of 232.248 mph. Alexander Rossi will start second in the #20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet, followed by David Malukas in the Team Penske #12 Chevrolet, completing the front row.
Other favorites fill the field with the popular Pato O’Ward starting sixth in his #6 Arrow Mclaren Chevrolet and Conor Daly lining up eighth in his #23 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet. Deeper in the highly competitive field are the two other Team Penske Chevrolets of Scott Mclaughin and 2024 500 winner Josef Newgarden; just a few of many names who have a serious shot at contending for the win come Sunday.
Katherine Legge will attempt to make history by attempting ‘the double’ and becoming the first woman ever to complete both the Indianapolis 500 and the later NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600, something that only a handful of drivers before her have even attempted. She starts 26th in her HMD Motorsports #11 Chevrolet and is one to watch.
For pole-winner Palou, this continues a dominant streak comparable to that of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Max Verstappen, and any other great of sport. What Palou is doing right now is simply awe-striking, regardless of what happens next Sunday.
The Indy 500 is the world’s greatest racing spectacle, no matter individual opinion. These are upside down airplanes travelling at speeds deemed too unsafe by the vast majority of other racing series, and they are maintaining that speed for the entire length of 500 miles of running. It is perhaps the most sought after win in motorsports, attracting stars from F1 like Fernando Alonso and NASCAR in Kyle Larson.
All throughout the field there are stories to follow, and Palou’s dominance hides how equal of a chance the entire field of 33 cars has of winning on Sunday. There will be strategy surrounding fuel-mileage, so look for the lead to change often as drivers attempt to get better mileage through drafting.
With the cars cutting through the air at such high speeds, they will be leaving a hole in the air behind them leading to a reduced air pressure on the following car and allowing that car to reach higher speeds, close the gap and pass, or lift off the throttle for better gas mileage. But the car behind will also contend with dirty air in the corners, where the upside down airplane wings will lose the valuable air pressure that gives the cars grip in the first place.
