On Wednesday, Feb. 25 Rio Hondo College hosted a blood drive just outside the library, drawing the attention of students, staff, and faculty walking through campus. The event aimed to encourage students to give back to their community in a simple yet meaningful way. Tables, donation chairs, and medical equipment were set up right outside the campus library, creating a welcoming environment for those interested in participating. Staff members were present throughout the day to guide donors through the process and answer any questions.
“This blood drive is to help hospital patients in need of blood,” explained TJ, a staff member helping run the event. Blood donations play a critical role in saving lives, whether patients undergo surgery, receiving cancer treatment, or recovering from serious injuries. By hosting the drive directly on campus, Rio Hondo College made it easier for students with busy schedules to contribute to this important cause.
Many students showed up supporting the effort, including second-year student Bryan Ramirez. Bryan shared that he had been wanting to visit a plasma center for some time but found it difficult to fit into his schedule. Between attending classes, studying, and managing responsibilities outside of school, he simply could not find the time. He explained that even outside of school hours, his schedule remained packed. When he heard about the blood drive on campus, he saw it as the perfect opportunity to finally donate. Bryan said he was grateful that Rio Hondo organized the event because it was convenient not only for him but also for other students who wanted to help but didn’t have the time to go to a donation center.
Bryan was not the only student who wanted to make a difference. Second-year student Mario Gonzalez also participated in the drive. When asked why he chose to donate, Mario said, “I have a lot of free time between classes, and I just want to help people out and this is the best and most convenient way I can do that.” For Mario, the blood drive was a productive way to use his free time on campus while contributing to a cause that benefits others.
Overall, the blood drive highlighted the strong sense of community at Rio Hondo College and demonstrated how small acts of generosity can have a significant impact on those in need.
